We’ve seen generic springs fail to hold the cap open fully, which leaves the damper half-sealed and whistling in wind. Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

• You feel a cold draft or smell fireplace odors when the damper is “closed.” The seal isn’t seating. On throat dampers, this is typically a warped plate, a broken hinge at the frame, or debris built up along the seat. On lock-tops, the cable may not be pulling the cap fully down.
• The handle turns freely with no resistance, or the cable goes slack. The linkage has let go somewhere between the lever and the plate. On DuraFlex throat dampers, that’s usually the cotter pin at the handle rod, and on lock-tops, a frayed or snapped cable at the bracket.
• You hear a rattling or banging inside the chimney when the wind picks up. The damper plate is loose enough to move with the pressure, or a lock-top cap is partially open and oscillating. That movement wears the frame and spreads the problem.
• Rust streaks appear on the firebox floor or the damper plate shows visible corrosion. Moisture is getting past the seal, or the plate itself has started to rot. In Alexandria’s humidity, once the metal starts rusting through, the only fix is replacement.
• Birds or debris are getting into the firebox. On lock-top dampers, this usually means the cap isn’t sitting flush on the flue tile, or the screen element has failed. DIY or Call Us?

How long does a DuraFlex damper actually last?

In Alexandria’s climate, expect 12 to 20 years from a throat damper and 8 to 15 from a lock-top’s moving parts, depending on how often the fireplace is used and how much moisture the flue sees.
